AI Security Maturity: How to Assess It
AI security maturity is the degree to which governance, controls, evidence, and improvement processes are consistently applied across the AI lifecycle.
Maturity versus compliance
Compliance asks whether a requirement is met. Maturity asks how consistently the organization can do the work, prove it, and improve over time.
For AI programs, a team may have a policy or a control statement and still be early in maturity if it cannot produce evidence, cannot monitor usage, or cannot remediate issues reliably.
Illustrative maturity scale
The scale below is illustrative. It is not an industry standard and it is not the SecureAIScore methodology itself.
| Level | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Ad hoc | AI controls are inconsistent, undocumented, or reactive. |
| Repeatable | Core practices exist and are used in some teams or systems. |
| Managed | Controls are defined, owned, and measured with regular review. |
| Measured | Evidence is tracked and used to compare risk and improvement over time. |
| Optimized | Control learning, automation, and feedback loops are used to improve continuously. |
How to assess maturity
Assess maturity by checking whether the organization can identify its AI systems, define ownership, enforce control expectations, collect evidence, and act on findings.
Scoring should reward consistent evidence and penalize missing ownership or undocumented assumptions.
- Inventory what AI systems exist.
- Map controls to business and technical owners.
- Check whether evidence can be produced on demand.
- Review whether remediation work is prioritized and tracked.
How SecureAIScore uses maturity
SecureAIScore uses its own scoring model to turn assessment inputs into a maturity profile and improvement roadmap. That model is proprietary, versioned, and designed to support self-service assessment.
The result is meant to help teams compare current state with next-step priorities, not to claim a universal maturity standard.
